If these symptoms sound or look familiar to you,
then you maybe suffering from sleep apnea. There are two types
of sleep apnea. And sleep apnea treatments,
of course, are based on the type the individual presents with.
The less common type is Central Sleep Apnea (CSA). This is
a result of a central nervous system disorder. The disorder
could be caused by a stroke, brain tumor or brain infection
or any disease or injury that directly effects the area of
the brain that controls respiration, the brain stem. The most
effective treatment for CSA is medication that stimulates
a persons need to breath and oxygen.
The other kind, and most common, is termed Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This is caused by restriction to cessation in the air flow from the mouth and nose to the lungs. Sleep apnea treatments for OSA are more varied than those for CSA. The cause for this type of sleep apnea can be very diverse. Frequently obese or over weight people will suffer from OSA, although only 50% of sufferers are over weight. Large tonsils or adenoid can impede air flow into the lungs, leading to CSA as well as other physical concerns, deviated septum, head and neck of odd shape, receding chin or enlarged tongue. Sometimes during sleep the throat muscles and tongue become so relaxed that they inhibit the air flow. This is usually secondary to alcohol, sedatives or age.
What ever the reason, diagnosis is important for the correct
secession of events to begin. Sleep
apnea treatments can be through self help, like loosing
weight or discontinuing the use of alcohol or sedatives. Or
the condition may require medical intervention. These can
be done through CPAP, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure
while your asleep or by dental intervention if the condition
extends from the shape of the face, mouth, tongue. If all
else fails, there is the last option of surgery. This is usually
only done as a last resort.
